BALROGS

Balrogs are creatures made of fire, though resembling a man underneath. They carry a whip and live in the shadows and deepest parts of the world. They belong to the same race as Sauron; Maiers. In the Age of the Trees before the First Age, they were bothered by none until Morgoth corrupted them. Only about seven are said to be habitants of Middle-Earth of which most died in the Wars of Beleriand, Wrath, and Silmarils.

Durins Bane

The Balrog which drove out the dwarves from Khazad-Dum, which later became known as Moria. When Durins' people dug too deep, eager for yet bigger halls, Durins Bane emerged from the depths of the world. This was the Balrog which threw down Gandalf into the dark pits with him.
